Navigating Vietnam’s Weather: What to Expect Right Now

As we move toward the end of May, Vietnam is experiencing a distinct transition in its weather patterns. If you are planning to travel or are currently exploring the country, here is a snapshot of what the atmosphere feels like across the different regions.

A Note on the Current Heatwave

It is important to note that Northern and Central Vietnam are currently experiencing a significant early-summer heatwave. Temperatures in many areas—including Hanoi—have recently climbed near or above 39°C (102°F). During this period, it is essential to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the peak sun hours (typically 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM), and seek out air-conditioned environments during the hottest parts of the day.

Regional Weather Breakdown

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay):

The North is firmly in the grasp of the early summer season. While the cities are feeling the intense heat of the current heatwave, the mountainous regions like Sapa offer a welcome, cooler reprieve. You can expect high humidity and occasional short, sharp thunderstorms, which often arrive in the late afternoon to break the heat.

  • Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue):

This remains one of the most reliable regions for sunshine right now. While temperatures are high, the coastal breezes provide some relief. It is generally drier here than in the North or South, making it an excellent time for beach visits and exploring the historic streets of Hoi An—though we recommend doing your sightseeing in the early morning or after 5:00 PM to avoid the midday sun.

  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta):

The South has entered the "green season." You should prepare for the occasional afternoon downpour. These showers are usually brief and intense, often clearing up as quickly as they began. While it remains hot and humid, these rains provide much-needed freshness to the landscape, keeping the Mekong Delta lush and vibrant.

Tips for Traveling in May

  • Stay Hydrated & Protected: Carry a reusable water bottle, wear sunscreen, and consider a light, wide-brimmed hat or an umbrella to provide your own shade.

  • Plan Around the Heat: Schedule your most strenuous sightseeing or walking tours for the early morning. Midday is best spent in a museum, a cooking class, or enjoying a slow coffee in a shaded café.

  • Pack Smart: Opt for lightweight, breathable natural fabrics like linen or cotton. Don't forget a compact, high-quality umbrella—it’s just as useful for blocking the intense sun as it is for the sudden rain showers.

  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on local weather forecasts, especially if you are heading to coastal or mountainous areas.

While the heat is currently intense, May offers a unique beauty—from the lush green rice terraces in the North to the vibrant energy of a country in full summer bloom. With a bit of flexibility in your schedule, you can still have an incredible and memorable journey through Vietnam.
